Let the Natural Light In

Skylights are a great option to add natural light into any room in your house. You may have interior rooms that do not allow for windows and therefore tend toward dark and dreary. Skylights can allow small rooms to appear larger and more spacious. Additionally, they can improve ventilation in humid spaces. A skylight may be just the solution for these rooms.

By allowing in more natural light, skylights can also help reduce your energy costs because they cut down on the need for electric lighting. The increased sunlight may also help warm up your spaces on cold winter days. This can be especially helpful during cold, dark winter days in the Pacific Northwest.

Finally, the additional sunlight from skylights will enhance your home and help improve your mood, happiness, energy, and overall well-being.

Types of Skylights

fixed skylight

Fixed Skylights

These are typical skylight windows that do not open. They allow in light and may provide for additional views from your home. Fixed skylights are most frequently installed on high ceilings that do not allow for interior access.

vented skylight

Vented Skylights

Vented skylights look similar to fixed skylights, however they can be opened manually or electronically. In addition to extra light, they will help provide additional fresh air flow and moisture control to your spaces.
tubular

Tubular Skylights

Tubular skylights are different from skylight windows in that they are long tubes that are meant to allow more light into your home. They are great to use in small spaces, such as bathrooms and closets, because they do not take up much space and will fit in between obstructions. These skylights may also have dimmers to control the amount of light they allow in, as well as exhaust fans to help manage humidity.
curb mounted

Curb-Mounted Skylights

This type of skylight requires a curb to be built up on the roof, that is then properly flashed in, and the skylight is mounted on top of the curb. This style of skylight is the better choice for leak prevention and will likely allow more light through the same size framing than a deck-mounted version. A curb-mounted skylight is usually a more economical choice for a new build home.
deck mounted

Deck-Mounted Skylights

Deck-mounted skylights are a more modern design that do not require a curb as they fasten directly to the roof. The aluminum or galvanized frame is also flashed to the roof, and requires the skill and expertise of a quality roofing company. This design may be more aesthetically pleasing to some people, as the profile is lower and flatter to the roof. A deck-mounted skylight is most often recommended for installation on an existing roof.
